"We are all Peepoople" is the fitting slogan of the Swedish Social Enterprise with the mission that all people shall have access to dignified and hygienic sanitation – with a long-term goal to reach 150 million people daily.
The Swedish social enterprise has developed the Peepoo, "a personal, single-use, self-sanitising, fully biodegradable toilet that prevents faeces from contaminating the immediate area as well as the surrounding ecosystem. After use, Peepoo turns into valuable fertiliser that can improve livelihoods and increase food security." But PeePoo is more then a portable toilet and fertiliser. Peepoople develops a humanitarian response system around the innovative product.
Peepoople hereby addresses the ongoing humanitarian crisis of sanitation and clean water. The numbers are staggering. More than 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation . 40 out of every 100 people in the world do not have their own toilet. Diarrhoea kills more than 30 000 children per week worldwide.
Natural disasters and conflicts compact the problem. "On average, 255 million people are directly impacted by natural disasters each year. More than 42 million people are displaced by violent conflicts at this very moment. As a result, the toll on human life rapidly multiplies. Diarrhoea diseases alone contribute to up to 50% of all deaths in camp situations and more than 80% of these are children under two years old." The Peepoople responds to an emergency through the rapid implementation of secure excreta handling and hand washing practices on household level.
Peepoople works in urban slums, schools, emergency response and refugee camps. For humanitarian response in emergencies and refugee camps, Peepoople sells the Peepoo products (Peepoo Personal Pack, Peepoo Kiti and Peepoo Yizi) to aid organisations, UN agencies and governments.
In urban slums Peepoople has an inclusive business model for the bottom of the pyramid market, covering both ends of the value chain – sanitation and agriculture. The Peepoo School Programme is a donor-funded program currently providing hygiene and sanitation to more than 10.000 school children in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. Peepoople is already active in these countries: Kenya, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Philippines, Syria and Haiti.
